Imphal: Manipur government has foiled Suicide protest of transgender rights activist Malem Thongam against the disunity of 45 ruling MLAs to oppose the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs who have been demanding a Seperate Administration for Kuki-Zo parallel to the armed Kuki-Zo attacks to Meitei community.
Malem Thongam was apprehended by police in the early morning ahead of the deadline at 3pm of Saturday.
She had served a 15-day ultimatum to the 45 ruling MLAs of the BJP led Manipur government to oust the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs from the state Assembly and to promptly act to restore peace in the state.
She said she condemns the impotency of the 45 MLAs in the ruling who cannot unite and act against those 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs who stand united for the cause of building a seperate Kuki territory. “This would lead to further the Manipur issue.”
“No individual or group instigate me to take up this step of mine.” “We don’t know what will happen even while at home. It is better to kill myself before they (Kuki) kill me.”
The rights activist made these statements, ahead of her arrest’ to a man who called her on phone, which went viral.
The 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs abstained from Manipur Assembly for three consecutive sessions till the last session in August.
People started demonstrating on roads at dusk in Imphal city condemning the arrest of Malem.
