Imphal: Demanding justice for the custodial death of a 27-year-old man, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the incident, has imposed a 24-hour general strike across Manipur starting at the midnight of Thursday.

“Neglecting the demands of the people by the government shows that they do not value the lives of Manipuris. This is a clear indication of an attempt to cleanse Meitei community in the state,” the JAC alleged.

Khoisnam Sanajaoba, also known as Ibungo, of Khurai Ningthoujam Leikai in Imphal East, was arrested by Manipur Police on March 31 and died on April 13 while in judicial custody.

Manipur Police had said that Sanajaoba was an active member of the proscribed underground outfit Kangleipak Communist Party-Noyon faction (KCP-Noyon), and was allegedly involved in extortion and intimidation.

In a late-night statement issued on Wednesday, the people’s action committee stated that a series of protests have been taken up. The committee and family members had earlier expressed their stance that they will not accept the body of Sanajaoba until their demands are met.

The committee, on April 17, demonstrated with people at Khurai, Imphal East. It issued a five-day ultimatum to the governor of Manipur, demanding justice to the death of Sanajaoba.

The local woman groups, on April 20, held a torch rally at Khurai.

The committee has called upon the people of Manipur, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to support the statewide general strike.
