Imphal: Manipur Police on Saturday seized five single-barrel guns and camouflage uniforms which were used during the observance of ‘Separation Day’ in Saikul of Kangpokpi district.

As part of the security preparations, the district magistrate of Churachandpur issued a restriction order on Friday permitting the assemble of May 3 anniversary events under strict conditions. The order stated, “people attending the convention should not carry any type of article which can be used as weapons (stick, lathi, firearms, etc.), and the wearing of camouflage uniforms or combat dress is strictly prohibited.”

Despite the restrictions, a video clip surfaced on social media on Saturday showing armed individuals in camouflage uniforms performing a gun salute at the Saikul Public Ground in Kangpokpi district during a ‘Separation Day’ event.

“In connection with the gun salute incident at Saikul, Kangpokpi district, an FIR was registered at the concerned police station. After local elders were summoned, raids were carried out to arrest the miscreants,” Manipur Police Control Room said.

Police said further operations are underway to apprehend those involved and recover more weapons. The organisers of the programme will face legal action, the statement added.

The event in Saikul was organised by Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai, Kangpokpi district.
