Manipur Police commandos in 5 districts launch arms-down protest

Imphal: Following the firing at the residence of additional superintendent of police (Operation), Moirangthem Amit and abduction of the MPS officer including his escort personal, commando personnel in 5 districts of Manipur launched armed down strike on Wednesday.

On Tuesday evening some armed miscreants of around 200 overpowered police commando personnel along Wangkhei road in Imphal East and assaulted the commando personnel including the MPS officer who was the officer-in-charge commando unit Imphal West unit.

During the incident the armed miscreants around 200 in numbers reportedly open fired at the residence of the MPS office located at Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai, Imphal East in which four vehicles (4-wheelers) were damaged and properties of the residence. The armed miscreants abducted at least three commando personnel along with Amit later they were reportedly rescued from Kwakeithel near Pitambara English School, Imphal West at around 8.30 pm.

The commando personnel were admitted at Raj Medicity, Imphal and later they were all discharged in the late night on the same day.

At least 2 women received minor bullet injuries from the stray bullets.

Police reported that a case has been registered in connection with the incident at the concerned police station.

On Wednesday morning a video went viral in which one person in the voice note stated that commando personnel at its district commando complex, Minuthong, Imphal started arms-down strike after the Tuesday’s unwanted incident. The person also narrated that the personnel took the step after the state government and senior police officers failed to take necessary steps in connection with the incident against the armed miscreants.

Media persons were not allowed to enter the commando complex. DIG, N. Herojit and superintendent of police, Imphal West, Ksh. Shivakanta were seen going inside the commando complex. After about an hour of meeting with the commando personnel the two senior officer were seen leaving the commando complex.

Meanwhile, reports were received that commando personnel of Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Thoubal also joined the protest.

Since May 3, the day violence erupted in Manipur, the state police Commando have been taking a major role in maintaining law and order situation in peripheral areas including border town Moreh. Some state police including commando, SDPO, Moreh were killed.

Meanwhile, locals Meira Paibi of Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai, Wangkhei Nandeibam Leikai and Wangkhei Thangjam leikai demonstrated a sit-in rally in connection with the incident.

The protestors decried against the firing in congested areas.

One of the protestors, Laishram ongbi Damayendi told reporters that the locals of the area condemned firing in congested areas. She appealed not to repeat similar incident in the future.
