Manipur adopts adult Aadhaar verification process

Imphal: Manipur has adopted issuing adult Aadhaar cards, with multi-layered scrutiny designed to ensure only genuine applicants are approved.

This was revealed by officials during a high-level review meeting held at Raj Bhawan on Monday, said officials on Tuesday.

A statement issued by commissioner (Home), government of Manipur, N. Ashok Kumar stated that the meeting, chaired by the governor of Manipur, focused on Aadhaar enrolment, upgradation, and service delivery in the state.

Senior officials including the chief secretary, and representatives from the Home department, UIDAI, Social Welfare, and Education departments were present.

According to officials, the adult Aadhaar issuance process in Manipur strictly adheres to guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Every adult Aadhaar application undergoes detailed verification, and approval is granted only at the State Headquarters level, specifically by the office of the Special Secretary (Home).

One of the UIDAI officials present at the meeting remarked, “Manipur’s adult Aadhaar process is perhaps the most stringent in the country.”

The enhanced scrutiny aimed at preventing any illegal foreign nationals from obtaining Aadhaar and ensures the integrity and security of the identification system in the border state.

In addition to adult enrolments, the meeting also discussed mandatory biometric updates for Aadhaar holders. Two compulsory updates Mandatory Biometric Updation 1 (MBU-1) between the ages of 5 and 7, and MBU-2 after the age of 15 ‘are being strictly implemented’.

These updates, which are free of charge, aimed to help maintain the accuracy of biometric and demographic data throughout an individual’s lifetime.

“These updates are crucial for ensuring that Aadhaar data remains current and reliable,” said an official. “They also play a key role in enabling seamless access to government schemes and financial services by eliminating authentication issues.”

Officials reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a secure and reliable Aadhaar ecosystem in the state, especially given Manipur’s sensitive geographical and demographic landscape.
