Kuki groups bar Kuki-Zo MLAs in Manipur government formation

Imphal:  A joint meeting of several key Kuki-Zo civil and community organisations held in Churachandpur on Thursday resolved that no Kuki-Zo members of Manipur Legislative Assembly shall participate in the formation of people’s government.

The resolution was passed during a joint session at the Kuki Inpi Manipur secretariat at Bijang, Churachandpur.

The meeting was attended by top representatives of the Kuki Inpi Manipur, its federating units including the Kuki Students’ Organisation-General Headquarters, Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi-GHQ, Kuki Christian Leaders’ Forum, Kuki Women’s Union-GHQ, Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights-GHQ, Kuki Chiefs’ Association-Manipur, as well as district units and heads of departments.

After detailed deliberation, the gathering unanimously resolved that no Kuki-Zo MLA shall “participate or take part in any manner in the formation of a new popular government in the state of Manipur.”

The resolution stated that under no circumstances would the Kuki-Zo people compromise on their ancestral land, culture, identity, or political, social and economic rights.

“The resolution reflects the collective political will and aspiration of the Kuki-Zo people and is binding upon all Kuki-Zo representatives and community organisations,” the joint statement said, advising all concerned to strictly adhere to the resolution “in letter and spirit.”

The resolution comes at a time when 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, have been consistently pressing for a ‘separate administration’ demanding Union Territory status in the wake of the ethnic violence that erupted in the state on May 3, 2023.
