Methamphetamine drug worth Rs 22 crore seized in Manipur

Imphal: Manipur Police seized a large quantity of contraband drugs along National Highway 37 (Imphal–Silchar via Jiribam), on Friday.

According to police, a truck traveling from Imphal was intercepted near the New Keithelmanbi police picket under Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West district on Thursday. The police team discovered suspected contraband hidden inside the truck’s roof ceiling.

“Further verification confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine,” police said. The drugs were packed in 50 separate packets, with a total weight of 57.285 kg. The estimated value of the seized drugs in the international market is around Rs 22 crore.

“The truck driver, identified as Nawaj Sharif, 34, of Lilong Chingjao, Thoubal district, was arrested on the spot, and the drugs were confiscated,” police said. “Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend others involved in the interstate drug trafficking network,” it added.
