Imphal: A Kuki woman was killed in crossfire between security forces and suspected Kuki militants in Chingphei area, Churachandpur district.
The incident took place shortly after a firing incident in Phubala, Bishnupur district on Thursday afternoon.
The crossfire began around 3:30 pm when security forces moved into Chingphei for area domination following the Phubala incident. In the Phubala incident a 60-year-old Meitei farmer was injured by a bullet allegedly fired by Kuki people.
During the fire exchange a Kuki woman, identified as Hoikholhing Haokip, was reportedly struck by a stray bullet. She was evacuated to Churachandpur District Hospital and succumbed to her injuries.
Kuki civil society organizations claimed that the deceased was wife of the chief of Lanchingmanbi village, Churachandpur district.
Authorities have not issued any official statement on the circumstances leading to her death, but said the situation remained tense in the area.
