Phubala women cautions shutdown, Kuki groups call shutdown

Imphal: Phubala women groups have issued an ultimatum to the governor, chief secretary and DGP of Manipur, demanding that the culprits involved in the Phubala firing incident allegedly carried out by Kuki militants be identified by 11 am on Friday.

The women groups warned that if their demands are not met by the deadline, they will impose a total shutdown across the state.

“Combined security forces are continuing search operations to nab the culprit(s). Every effort is being made to bring those responsible to justice at the earliest. Additionally, security arrangements related to farming activities in the area will be reviewed. Adequate security shall be provided to ensure the safety of farmers in the fields and prevent recurrence of such incident. The public is requested to maintain peace and not circulate unverified information. Further updates will be issued as the investigation progresses,” said Manipur police on X.

Meanwhile, in response to the death of Hoikholhing Haokip a Kuki woman allegedly struck by a stray bullet during a crossfire between security forces and suspected Kuki militants in Chingphei the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), a Kuki-Zo organization, issued a strong statement condemning the incident.

Calling it “yet another targeted assault aimed at the cleansing of the Kuki-Zo minority,” the ITLF announced an indefinite shutdown with immediate effect as a mark of protest and mourning.

Kuki Women’s Organisation for Human Rights called for immediate arrest and punishment of those involved in Hoikholhing’s killing.

Tensions remain high in the region following these developments.
