Imphal: Tension erupted between Meitei and Kuki communities when a group of Kuki obstructs Meitei villagers to plough a paddy field which remained unutilised after Kuki began to occupy Meitei villages in the Meitei-Kuki conflict that show seeds on May 3, 2023.
A Meitei farmer, resident of Leitanpokpi, Imphal East went to with a tractor to plough the paddy field at Sadu Lampak, near a Kuki village.
Police said, according to reports, some Kuki villagers nearby objected, claiming the field did not belong to the farmer. Shortly after, nearby Meitei residents also arrived at the site, escalating tensions.
Videos circulating on social media alleged that Kuki villagers came down to stop Meitei farmers from cultivating the land, said Manipur police.
In some other videos the villagers from both sides were seen pelting stones and shooting with catapults against one another.
Security forces, including teams led by the additional SP of Imphal East and central paramilitary personnel, were already present at the spot and were actively controlling the situation. Additional reinforcements led by the district SP were also been dispatched.
Authorities have urged the public not to believe in unverified rumours and to maintain peace.
No casualties have been reported so far till the filing of this report.
