Imphal: BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been accused of ‘orchestrating a politically motivated campaign to tarnish the image of the Congress party and the Gandhi family’.
Joint secretary and spokesperson of AICC, Mathew Anthony, in a press conference held here on Monday, said despite being in power for over a decade, the BJP continues to fear the enduring legacy, respect, and emotional connect that the Gandhi family and the Congress party share with the people of India. “The biggest scare for Modi and the BJP is the love, respect, and integrity associated with Congress and the Gandhi family in the hearts of Indians — something they have failed to break despite being in power.”
Referring to a series of cases filed against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, Mathew accused the BJP-led government of using institutions like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as political tools. “They are desperately trying to muzzle the voice of Congress.”
Addressing the ongoing case involving National Herald and Associated Journals Limited (AJL), Mathew explained the financial distress faced by AJL, which led to its restructuring. He clarified that Young Indian — a not-for-profit charitable company under Section 8 of the Companies Act — was created in 2010 to revive AJL. “No director or shareholder in Young Indian has gained financially. No salaries, profits, or dividends have been received, nor can they be,” he emphasized.
He also criticized the BJP for spreading misinformation about the value of AJL’s assets, calling claims of Rs 5000 crore valuation as imaginary and fabricated.
Mathew said the initial complaint filed by Subramanian Swamy in 2012 was dismissed by the Election Commission, and that all relevant transactions were disclosed publicly by the Congress party. However, he alleged that the ED, which he called the Political Extortion Machine of BJP,Q filed a case years later.
