Imphal: A clash broke out at Along Makhong, in Thoubal district of Manipur, between an irate mob and the police after the mob damage an under-construction house for allegedly found encroaching on a public road, on Monday morning.
Police said a mob began damaging the house and an adjacent shop using an excavator. The structure was reportedly being built by Waikhom Somen alias Tayai, 53, where locals alleged that the construction had encroached on the roadway.
As tensions escalated, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs. No casualties were reported during the incident.
Most of the concrete pillars of the building were damaged by the mob before the situation was brought under control.
DIG (Range II) Jogeshchandra Haobijam, Thoubal SP Shivanand Surve, and other senior police officials later visited the site to assess the situation.
Officials said the dispute was resolved after both the locals and Somen were summoned to the deputy commissioner’s office for a meeting.
