Imphal: Following the resignation of N. Biren Singh as chief minister of Manipur, BJP North East in-charge Sambit Patra held a closed-door meeting with several legislators at Hotel Imphal., here on Monday.

Ministers Y. Khemchand, Th. Biswajit, Th. Basantakumar, and Hill Area Committee chairman Dinganglung Gangmei were seen exiting the hotel after the meeting.

Sources indicated that the discussions were held separately.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Khemchand said, “We were discussing on how to bring back normalcy in the state.”

Regarding the selection of a new chief minister, Khemchand said, “That will be decided through the High Command’s process. Even I am wondering who will be the new CM.”

“If the High Command projects me, I will accept it,” he replied to reporters.

There has been rumors that a crucial meeting to decide the leader of the Manipur Legislative Assembly might take place in Delhi on Wednesday.

NPP Manipur president and MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan said while the NPP had withdrawn support from Biren Singh’s government, it remains a part of the NDA at the Centre and will continue to support the state government under BJP leadership.

“We did not believe in Biren’s leadership due to his failure to restore peace in the state. He has resigned. We will cooperate with the BJP government as part of the NDA alliance,” said Hassan.

Sources said some BJP MLAs, including ministers dissatisfied with Biren Singh’s leadership, are currently camped at a hotel in Imphal.

Security in Imphal has been heightened since Sunday, a few hours before Biren Singh tendered his resignation.
