Imphal: Some people in Manipur are cultivating poppy plants after mass deforestation, said professor of Business Management at Christ University, Jayant Padmaker Mahajan, who is also an environmentalist, and urged them not to deforest the land for short-term gains, “as it will lead to long-term losses”.
Mahajan expressed his pain upon witnessing mass deforestation in the northeastern states, including Manipur.
He shared his message during his reception at the Shiv Sena Manipur State Unit office, here on Friday.
The 50-year-old from Katrang village, Khopoli district, Maharashtra, visited Manipur as part of his solo cycling journey, spreading the message “Change Before Climate Change.”
He began his solo ride on January 23 at Pune. During his journey, he encountered widespread deforestation, including in the hilly areas of Manipur.
His solo ride will cover the entire country, he said.
He was received by state president of Shiv Sena, M. Tombi as he reached Imphal.
