‘Huge’ cache of weapons recovered ahead of Lok Sabha Elections in Manipur

Imphal: A combined team of Imphal West police including commandos and 33 Assam Rifles have recovered a huge cache of weapons ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections on Sunday.

The weapons were recovered during a earch and area domination operations in connection with ensuing Lok Sabha elections at Uchiwa  Lamhang area under Mayang Imphal area of Imphal West.

Fish farms, farm houses and other nearby houses were searched in which a huge cache of arms, ammns, explosives and walkie-talkie sets were found amongst tall grasses near the fish farms.

The recovered weapons were two SBBL guns, four 36 HE hand grenade, two tube launcher, two sets  of Kenwood walkie-talkie: one 9 mm pistol (country made) with magazine, five 7.62 mm SLR ammunition, twenty-one .303 rifle ammunition: twenty-four . 38 revolver ammn: one ammunition charger guard, one SLR along with one magazine and one carbine with one magazine.

The weapons were found wrapped with clothes, jacket shirt in a gunny bag and carry bag.

“However, no arrest is made as the items seemed hidden a few days back,” a police report said.

“These items are likely to be used for extortion/kidnapping/assassination to disturb peaceful conduct of Lok Sabha Elections, 2024, create law & order problems in the State. The above arms, ammn, explosives & W/T sets are recovered/seized as per law.”
