Imphal: Manipur CAF and PD minister L.  Susindro on Wednesday said almost all the valley people are unarmed while many hill settlers possess licensed gun arms under Suspension of Operation and narco-terrorist took the advantage to wage war against Indian Union.

Under the ‘Free movement regime’ citizens of both India and Myanmar were allowed to enter freely on both sides within a distance of 16 kilometres. However, Assam Rifles who was to secure the border are protecting the border 15 kilometre back from the border. So, the number of illegal influx of infiltrators are facing in Manipur, he added.

To prevent the illegal influx of population from Myanmar the present government under the leadership of chief minister N. Biren Singh made a special request to the Union Home Minister to set up police outposts along the border area, the minister said.

As per a Myanmar news channel (Delhi), it was reported that over 6 lakh Myanmarese have entered Indian territory passing through Manipur. The state government has requested to provide written records from the news channel. The news channel also reported that till date around 15 lakh population in Myanmar has been reduced, Susindro said.

There is a strong suspicion that many of the illegal Myanmar nationals have been settling in the nearby border village of Manipur. Moreover, under conspiracy with those illegal Myanmarese settling in Manipur and some of the Kukis who were settling earlier have been making Manipur, unrest, he added.

Before the eruption of the crisis in the state, he said, he inspected the hill areas of Manipur under the instruction of the chief minister to find out the cause of the scarcity of rainfall in the last few years. “I found that the western side of Thangjing hill range was almost clean and mass poppy plantation was also seen.”

He said the present government formed a committee to identify illegal Myanmarese by appointing three ministers from Kuki, Naga and Meitei by making the Kuki minister as chairman of the committee. If the government was against the Kuki community then the Kuki minister might not be appointed as chairman of the committee.
