Manipur observes National Cleanliness Day

Imphal: As observed in all parts of the country, Governor of Manipur Anusuiya Uikey joins in the observation of the 154th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi along with chief minister N. Biren Singh.

The main function was held at the Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal.

Governor led others at a wreath laying ceremony at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi during the occasion.

Briefing the media, the governor appeals all for collective efforts to resolve the ongoing strife in Manipur so that our age-old tradition of peaceful co-existence can be maintained and find a solution to the problem through dialogue.

She stressed that the principles of Mahatma Gandhi were filled with the spirit of love, non-violence, kindness, mutual brotherhood and forgiveness. Therefore, the true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary would be to follow and always remember his teachings, she asserted.

State Cabinet ministers and MLAs, top civil, police and government officials led by chief secretary Vineet Joshi were also present.

Anusuiya Uikey led the cleanliness campaign held in connection with ‘Swachh Bharat Diwas – National Cleanliness Day’ within the premises of Raj Bhavan, Imphal.

Officers and entire staff of Raj Bhavan and security personnel of 109 CRPF Batallion joined hands to clean up the Raj Bhavan premises that includes heritage buildings like the Darbar Hall, Banquet Hall, garden areas and others.

The governor emphasized on cleanliness for a healthy life as healthy citizens create a healthy nation.

Swachh Bharat Diwas or Swachhta Diwas is observed every year on October 2 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, during which citizens alike take part in performing tasks ranging from sweeping to garbage collection as part of the nationwide cleanliness drive.
