Imphal: Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the first Manipur Legislative Assembly constituted based on Universal Adult Franchise, which was inaugurated in Imphal, Manipur on October 18, 1948, was held at Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi on Wednesday.
The celebration was organised by Delhi Meetei Co-ordinating Committee (DMCC).
On this day, 1948, the first Legislative Assembly of Manipur was constituted on the basis of Universal Adult Franchise. It was inaugurated in Imphal, Manipur by the then Maharaja of Manipur.
This was the first time that such a legislative body was instituted in the entire South and South East Asia.
Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, JNU, delivered the Diamond Jubilee Lecture, “We, the People: A Reflection on the Trajectory of Society and Polity in Manipur”.
In this time of tmprecedented crisis that Manipur is facing, the gathering affirmed the enduring legacy of democracy and the idea of a plural and united Manipur.
Rajendra P. Gautam, former minister for Social Justice, present MLA of Deihl Legislative Assembly was the chief guest.
I. Hemochandra Singh, former Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly and Dr. Seram Rojesh, Convenor, DMCC, were present as guest of honour and president of the celebration.
