Assam Rifles seize large quantity contraband Areca Nuts, illegal liquor in Manipur

Imphal: Assam Rifles seized approximately Rs 92.37 crores worth of contraband Areca Nuts packed in 13,365 bags during a search operation in general area Namlee and Wanglee  villages of Kamjong District of Manipur on Friday.

The search operation was based upon credible inputs and led to the vigilant troops discovering several dumps of the contraband Areca Nuts. The seized items were handed over to Forest Beat 0fficer, Nambashi, the Assam Rifles said.

The ​Assam Rifles also foiled a major cross border smuggling attempt in general area Tuitam Khongkhai in  Churachandpur district on Thursday, when  vigilant troops of the force seized 1600 kgs of Areca Nuts  and 10231 bottles of illegal liquor valued at approximately Rs 65.31 lakh loaded in four pickup vehicles  and apprehended seven individuals. The apprehended individuals along with the seized items and vehicles were handed over to Sangaikot Police station for further legal proceedings.

​The seizure represents Assam Rifle’s ongoing commitment to preventing cross border smuggling of contraband and narcotics items, thereby contributing to the prevention of drug abuse amongst the youth and also thwarting economic damage to the state cause by contraband items, the Assam Rifles said.
