Imphal: Eighteen bunkers were destroyed in Imphal East district of Manipur on Wednesday during search operations by security forces to control the prevailing ethnic crisis.
“Search operations were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of Imphal-East, Kangpokpi and Kakching districts in which 18 (eighteen) bunkers were dismantled in Imphal East district,” Manipur Police Control Room said in a press not released on Wednesday evening.
To whom the bunkers belonged was not mentioned in the press note.
During the last 24 hours, the situation in the state was tense with sporadic incidents of firing and congregation of protestors, the control room said.
There was a congregation of a large crowd at Kwakta, Bishnupur with an intent to proceed towards Torbung area to remove barricades or bunkers, however security forces intervened and dispersed the crowd, it added.
Movement of 485 vehicles along NH-37 with essential items have been ensured. Strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles, it added.
A total of 131 Checkpoints were installed in different districts of Manipur. Police detained 1687 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the state.
The police department appeals to general public not to believe in rumours and be aware of false videos. It said any circulation of unfounded videos etc may be confirmed from the rumour free number – 9233522822 of Central Control room.
It also appeals to public to return the looted arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or nearest security forces immediately.
