3 Meitei civilians allegedly killed by Kuki militants in Bishnupur district of Manipur

Imphal: On Saturday early morning, three persons belonging to Meitei community were killed by miscreants allegedly to be Kuki militants at Kwakta Lamkhai in Bishnupur district of Manipur.

The incident took place at around 3 am while the three, all males, were sleeping.

They were identified as Yumnam jiten Meitei, 46, son of late Ibohal; Yumnam Pishak Meitei, 67, son of late Yumnam Tomba Meitei; and Yumnam premkumar Meitei, 39, son of Yumnam Pishak Meitei, all residents of kwakta Lamkhai KMC ward no.8.

Following the incidents state forces took on their heels for operation. The Assam Rifles intervened to stop the state forces. In the midst, Kuki militants started firing towards the village while angry mobs were burning down abandoned houses belonging to Kuki community.

At least 10 houses were set ablaze.

A fierce fight took place between security forces and Kuki miltants in which a police commando was hit on his left face. 

Another 17 years old villager of Torbung Bangla was also injured. He was hit by two bullets on the left knee. He was taken to Raj Medicity.

The injured police was Paonam Apollo, 32, of Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi, Imphal West.

Both were injured at around 8.30am on retaliation after Kuki militant’s attack.

Place of occurrence of the incident was Kwakta Thangjing Taba Lambi.

The injured man in uniform was rushed to the district hospital and later taken to Raj Medicity hospital in Imphal.

The situation remained tense. Many people from other parts of the valley thronged towards the incident area.

People in Imphal came out on the street to block roads.

Manipur government has imposed total curfew from 10:30 am in Imphal West and East, and Bishnupur districts.

The development came amid a 24 hour statewide public curfew by a group demanding to convene emergency session of Manipur state Assembly to take a decision on the present crisis.
