A one day sit-in protest staged decrying against the alleged brutal assault of two village volunteers.

The injured were Pukhrambam John, 35, son of late P. Binoy and Ningthoujam Romeson, 30, son of N. Hero both from Awang Wabgai under Sekmai police station, Imphal West.

Awang Leikinthabi village is located at the district border area of Imphal West and Kangpokpi district.

President of Koirengei Wangma Village Development Committee, Ph. Priyokumar on Sunday told reporters at Awang Leikinthabi ground that to defend the village from attacks from Kuki militants the villagers set up bunkers at the hill range of Nongpok Ninghthou and the volunteers were guarding the village on rotational basis at the bunkers.

On Sunday the two volunteers were allegedly assaulted by some personnel of 22 Assam Rifles when they tried to get their left out vehicle at the hill range. They went to the hills after getting information that Assam Rifles personnel were at the hills thinking that it will be out of danger. However, they were detained by the Assam Rifles personnel and allegedly assaulted brutally, Priyokumar said.

After district SP, Imphal West, Kangpokpi, officer-in-charge Sekmai Police station informed the commander of the Assam Rifles that they were released on the same day, he added.

After the two volunteers were set release, John started vomiting on Sunday night and his health condition started worsening. He was admitted to Sekmai health centre and later was referred to Raj Medicity. When he was diagnose under CT Scan it was found that he got internal bleeding on his head, Priyokumar added.

He said the hospital authority told them that he will be kept under medication. An open head surgery will be needed for his internal bleeding if required.

There has been rumors that Assam Rifles are assisting Kuki militants however the incident shows that it was not a rumor, he alleged.

The committee strongly condemned the act of Assam Rifles towards the villagers and the committee will lodge FIR against 22 Assam Rifle and will fight in the court. It will fight until it get justice. It said said it will knock the door of the Supreme Court.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been passing comment for peace during any crisis of other countries. However, he has been ignoring the crisis that has been occurring in his own country since May 3, he added.

The demand of Kukis should be made to the government, it is inappropriate to attack innocent public, Priyokumar said.

The protestors staged with placards “No two separate administration in Manipur”, “Implement NRC in Manipur”, “Withdraw SoO agreement with Kuki militants”.

The protestors demanded to immediately withdraw Assam Rifles from Manipur soil.
