Drivers union urges Biren to depute highway protection force

Imphal: All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers’ Union (AJRTDU) Jiribam and the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union urged chief minister N. Biren Singh to depute highway protection force along the two national highways in Manipur.

They urged all commercial vehicle transporters to support the statewide 48-hours general strike that began on Saturday midnight. General secretary of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union, Anil Maimom ‘strongly’ condemned the firing attack at Kaiphundai that creates a panicky situation for the drivers on the highways.

He appealed to the civil bodies and student bodies and to support the general strike. He said the chief minister has been taking various initiatives to bring development and welfare for the people of Manipur.

The transport drivers have faith in the present Biren led government that necessary steps for the safeguard of transport drivers will be taken up at the earliest. The drivers had been facing severe problems for years along the national highway caused by highway looters, gang and armed militants for extortion, he added.

Drivers along the national highways have been victims of kidnap, physical assaults, harassment and others for years. Such inconvenience could have not been faced by drivers if the government depute highway protection force, Anil said.

Drivers do not have foes and for livelihood the drivers are bringing essential commodities including essential drugs mainly along the two national highways, he added.
