Assam rifles foils series of smuggling attempts in Manipur

Imphal: Assam rifles in Manipur has foiled smuggling of timber, betel nuts and tobacco worth in crore of Rupees on Wednesday.

Shangshak Battalion of 10 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled smuggling of timber worth near Koshu village in Kamjong district.

Based on credible inputs from the reliable sources, the troops of Assam Rifles intercepted seven vehicles carrying illegal timber in the afternoon.

On thorough checking of the vehicles, seven persons were apprehended along with illegally smuggled timber worth Rs 6.72 crore, the Assam Rifles said.

The apprehended individuals and timber were handed over to forest officer, Finch Corner for further legal action.

Tengnoupal Batallion of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled the smuggling of illegal Betel Nuts near Khudengthabi.

The Assam Rifles said on receiving an input of illegal items near pineapple farm, Khudengthabi, troops of Tengnoupal Battalion carried out a thorough search of the area. Seventy-one gunny bags of Betel Nuts weighing 5230 Kg worth Rs 31.38 lakh were recovered, it said.

The recovered items have been handed over to customs department for further investigation.

In another move, Moreh Battalion Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR(South) foiled smuggling of tobacco in Moreh.

The troops while patrolling observed some cartons dumped in the jungle along the Indo Myanmar Border in Haolenphai village. On checking 25 cartons of Tobacco worth Rs 2.02 lakh were recovered. The recovered items were handed over to Customs department at Moreh for further legal action, the Assam Rifles said.
