Imphal, February 16, 2018 (DIPR): A seminar on Multiplying Farmers’ Income Opportunities in Animal Husbandry and Processing of Organic Pig and Fish Products – Potential for Exports – Focus North East was held today at Hotel Classic, Imphal, Manipur.
The seminar was jointly organised by PHD chamber of commerce and industry, ministry of food processing industries and North Eastern Council.
Minister of fisheries, hill and tribal area department, N. Kayishii said unemployment problem among the youths is on the rise with each year. The unemployment issue poses a challenge to the society which cannot be blamed solely to the government or to the society. The issue can be solved if each and every citizen takes up the responsibility to respond in whatever capacity feasible to address the problem.
He further added North East region is richly placed in many unique ways. We need to delve into it and find out the ways and means to address the challenges we face. He further added that the seminar is a platform between the academician, industrialist and the government facilitating discussion on topical issues in agri-business and food processing. The seminar will be helpful for the farmers and entrepreneurs in imparting awareness for self-employment generation among the unemployed youths particularly in Manipur, he added.
Mallika Verma, director and HOD, Agri-Business & Consumer Affairs, PHD chamber of commerce and industry, said the main objective of organising the seminar is to provide a forward linkage to the entrepreneurs to develop their industry. This will help in acquiring information and linking them to other similar industry for further development.
The PHD chamber of commerce and industry is planning to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with All Manipur Entrepreneur Association (AMEA) in the next 6-8 months. There is plan to organise entrepreneur development programme to guide individuals to become a successful entrepreneur who will generate employment in the state, she further added. During the seminar held previously in the state, the discussion focused on advantages of animal husbandry, especially by the women for economic empowerment, she added.

Singh, joint director, ICAR Research Centre, Manipur, Biramani Singh, joint director, fisheries, Rishikumar, president, AMEA, professor Ibohal Meetei, director Manipur Institute of Management Studies, Manipur University, Dr. H.C. Singh, director, AH and veterinary dept., S.K. Hazarika, regional manager (NER), PHD chamber of commerce and industry addressed the gathering in the seminar.
The experts opined on obtaining organic certificate from the government to ensure supply of the products without any difficulties that will be beneficial for the entrepreneurs and the farmers.
During the technical session, experts gave presentations on scientific pig farming, cultural aspects and ornamental fish, role of piggery in enhancing farmers’ income followed by an interactive session. Aspiring entrepreneurs and farmers of the state took part in the seminar.
