Shyamkumar intercepts illegal timber lorries

Imphal, September 09: Forest and environment minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today intercepted trucks ferrying timbers without transit pass and made them pay the necessary tax.

Shyamkumar intercepted the trucks while he was on his way to Kharasom to inspect the tress planted at New Canal Village. He found out the two trucks ferrying the logs with no transit pass. Later the trucks were made to pay necessary tax and take the transit pass. Few vehicles flouting traffic rules were also advised to strictly follow traffic guidelines.

Shyamkumar than inspected the trees planted during Vanamohatsava this year at the New Canal Village. The minister was pleased with the forest officials as the trees were strictly protected.

The minister on Thursday during Vanamohatsava, 2017 observation stated that he will inspect trees planted starting from this month.

This was not the first time Shyamkumar intercepted illegal timber trucks. In May this year the minister intercepted 14 trucks loaded with logs, illegally brought from Myanmar via Kamjong district in State’s Ukhrul district. The truck drivers were on their way to the neighbouring Nagaland, carrying fake transit passes. The trucks were carrying pine wood and Kangara wood logs. They were intercepted at Finch Corner junction along the Imphal-Ukhrul Highway.
