People looks for peace with the arrival of the Gaan-Ngai festival of Zelaingrong community with its state function held at Ragailong in Imphal East district participated by various communities including the Meitei.
The five days post-harvest festival that kicked off today is widely celebrated in all the Zeliangrong inhabited areas of Manipur.
Chief Secretary N. Nabakishore said this kind of festival which is participate by different communities from both hills and valley of Manipur signifies the love and affection among the people and it will promote the unity and harmony among various communities in the state.
To inaugurate the celebration youth created fire by early method to light up the torch. The guests and youth enjoyed shot put and long jump.
A group dance in the traditional attires of Zeliangrong was the main attraction of the celebration. Everyone in the gathering was together enjoyed sumptuous cuisines.
Amu Kamei, president of Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland), said Gaan-Ngai has been celebrated as an inseparable part of the community and celebrated every year at the respective villages. The Zeliangrong Union took the initiative to celebrate the age-old Gaan-Ngai at larger scale so that it would help spreading wider love through culture and tradition and its spirit of welfare and unity among the Zeliangrong tribes but also among all communities of the state.
Ningthouja Lancha, convenor of the Good Will Mission for Peaceful Co-existence who was present as a guest in the ceremony said, “Amidst the present ethnic tension all the communities come to enjoy the festival together. I feel that we will be able to restore the peaceful co-existence in the state.
The goodwill mission was initiated amid the rising tension of the indefinite economic blockade of the United Naga Council.
Nabakishore said, “The present economic blockade has reduced the gaiety of the festival to some extent.”
