Imphal: RK Meghen calls the need for collective resilience in addressing present challenges, reflecting on the historic struggles of Manipuri women during the Nupi Lal movements.

Meghen who is the former chairman of United Nation Liberation Front (UNLF) recalled the Nupi Lal, beginning with the first women uprising in 1904. He recounted how the British conquest of Manipur in 1891 had imposed harsh conditions on the people.

“The women of Manipur stood up against oppression, demonstrating an unparalleled spirit of resistance,” Meghen said.

He also spotlighted the second Nupi Lal (1933-45), which erupted over the artificial scarcity of rice during colonial rule.

Drawing a connection to contemporary movements, Meghen highlighted the Nisha Bandh as a grassroots initiative aimed at combating alcohol addiction, which later evolved into the iconic Meira Paibi Lup.

This women-led movement remains a cornerstone of advocacy and protection in Manipur, he said.

“The essence of Nupi Lal was for the collective betterment of society. That spirit should inspire us all today.”

“We must come together to build a stronger and unified Manipur. The divisive policies are weakening the Meitei community,” Meghen said.

He accused the government of using strategies designed to tear the state and urged citizens to remain active in safeguarding Manipur’s future.
