Imphal: Union minister of Highways and Road Transport Nitin Gadkari has sought cooperation from MP Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba and Manipur government to complete the construction of the two national highways in Manipur amid disturbances from various quarters.

The Union minister was replying to Manipur MP Sanajaoba at Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Sanajaoba placed the house that the construction works of National Highway 2 and National Highway 37 are very slow and present condition of both the highways are pathetically bad.

“What step will be taken up by the ministry to expedite the ongoing construction work and improve the national highways at the earliest?” He asked.

Gadkari replied that works have already been awarded. “We are facing crucial law and order in your state. The people are not allowing the contractors to work.”

He said he had special meetings with the chief minister and officers. The law and order situation in the state is very sensitive.

He urged MP Sanajaoba, chief minister and the state administration to cooperate the ministry to resolve the issue and allow to work.

“We will take preventive measure that how can the road be maintained,” Gadkari said.

He asked how can the project be implemented as the contractors are facing big losses and while the ministry is facing problem over compensation.

Stating that the Centre is very much committed to complete the work, the Union minister sought cooperation from the state.
