Imphal: Manipur government has issued a gazette notification, on Wednesday, for lifting of the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act in some areas of Manipur.
The notification came up while the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) and All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) keep demanding to withdraw the Act and make it stronger.
In the gazette notification issued on Wednesday it is mentioned that under provision to sub-section (2) of Section 1 of the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act, 1991 (Manipur Act. No. 4 of 1991), the governor of Manipur hereby withdraws the said Act from the areas of Greater Imphal, district headquarters, tourist locations in the state and registered hotel establishments with not less than 20 lodging rooms.
It further mentioned that the notification shall come into force with effect from the date of publication of the official gazette of Manipur.
The term ‘Greater Imphal’ mentioned in that order shall be as per description of areas contained in the Manipur Gazette Notification 198 (A) published on September 5, 1994.
The areas covered includes Kontha Khabam, Lamlongei, Kontha Ahallup, Kairang (Meitei), Konsam Leikai, Lairikyengbam Leikai, Laipham Siphai, Khurai Sajor Leikai, Khurai Thongam Leikai, Khurai Laishram Leikai, Moirang Kampu, Bashikhpng, Top Dusara, Top-Dusara (Imphal), Laingampat, Ningthoubung, Chingangbam-Leikai, Khaidem Leikai, Kongkham Leikai, Porompat, Khurai Khongnangma-khong, Top Naoriya, Kshetrigao, Naharup, Kongba Nongthombam Leikai, Ganga Pat, Keikhu Hao, Thangbrijou, Uchekon Khunou, Uchekon, Maning Pat, Nandeibam Leikai, Khongman, Torban (Khestri Leikai), Luwangei, Thongju, Kithapanung, Loumanbi, Wangkhei-Loumanbi, Takhok Awang, Bamon Kampu, Machahal, Kiyamgei, Kajipat in Imphal East.
Iroisemba, Meitei Langol, Bijoygovinda, Lamjaotongba, Sagolband, Sangaiprou Maning, Langthabal-Kuja, Langthabal-Mantrikhong, Meitram, Malom-Tulihal, Malom-Tuliyaima, Ningombam, Langthabal Lep, Mongsangei, Sangaiprou-Mamang, Heinou Khongnembi, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa, Maibam Leikai, Sorokhaibam Leikai, Ahongsangbam Leikai, Oinam Thinge1 (Khongnangpheidekpi), Laiphrakpam-Leikai, Naorem-Leikai, Oinam Leikai areas in Imphal West.
CADA and Nupi Samaj say, the state government is not taking any decision to resolve the present crisis and gives attention to liquor while the state is facing such a difficult situation. ‘This is extremely unfortunate’.
A resident of Imphal said the state government might have taken the step to earn raise the economy. Who is going to monitor the selling of liquor at black markets, especially Indian made foreign liquor, by doubling the rate of maximum retail price, he added.
He appealed the government to monitor the open selling of alcohol in some areas of Manipur at higher rates by paying illegal taxes.
