Imphal: About 20 students were injured on Wednesday, at Moirangkhom in Imphal West, in police action towards agitating students who were demanding speedy investigation for justice to the murder of two students, allegedly by armed Kuki people.
Pictures of the two teenagers, before and after death in the custody of armed militants, surfaced on social media on Monday. They went missing since July 6.
Groups of students who gathered at Singjamei and Thangmeiband stormed towards the chief minister’s bungalow. Security personnel were able to calm down the students.
Some representatives of the students were taken to meet chief minister N. Biren Singh to place their demands.
Angered at the murder of the duo, students took up demonstrations on streets in Imphal on Tuesday that lasted for hours. Over 60 students were reportedly insured and many of them were hospitalised.
Security forces fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the agitating students in both the days, which resulted to the injuries of students.
Immediately on Tuesday the state government reimposed ban on mobile internet service across the state for five days and declared closure of schools in the state.
People in different parts of the valley took up agitations in the evening that continued till late night, confronting the security forces.
Since the outbreak of Meitei-Kuki clash on May 3, the internet services had been banned and the ban was suspended on Saturday afternoon.
Manipur Pradesh Congress party members led by its president K. Meghachandra visited the homes of the two students—Phijam Hemanjit and Hijam Linthoingambi in Imphal on Tuesday. They also visited the injured students at the hospital.
The Manipur PCC demanded to speed up investigation on the killing of the students.
Various sections of the society demand the same to deliver justice for the victims and punish the miscreants.
Besides the agitation in Imphal, there were reports of students demonstrations in Bishnupur and Thoubal districts on Wednesday.
Chief minister N. Biren Singh on Tuesday assured the people of the state that both the state and central government are closely working together to nab the perpetrators.
To further expedite this crucial investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director, along with a specialised team, will be arriving in Imphal on Wednesday morning in a special flight. “Their presence underscores the commitment of our authorities to swiftly resolve this matter. I have been constantly in touch with Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah ji to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” Biren said.
