Imphal: Pravashi Bharatiya Samman awardee Dr Shachi Gurumayum, founder of Maol Keki Foundation (MKF), called on chief minister N. Biren Singh on Tuesday.
Sachi was conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, the highest honour conferred on overseas Indian.
He was amongst the 30 overseas Indian selected for the award which was announced on January 9, which is celebrated annually as ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD)’ to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in 1915.
Shachi founded the MaolKeki Foundation in December 2017 in memory of his late grandparents with the purpose of catalysing positive development in Manipur primarily in the areas of agriculture, education and healthcare.
Shachi has worked in rural parts of many African countries to enable small scale farmers to adopt better practices and technologies to improve yield and quality and he is a director of Switzerland based AgriMayum GmbH.
He is a graduate of St Stephen’s College (Delhi, completed Masters from University of Bristol (England) and got PhD from the same.
Shachi was also recognised by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in a reception programme held at Buckingham Palace for his contribution to British science.
