Imphal: Assam Rifles seized smuggled timber worth Rs 40 lakh in Ukhrul district on Wednesday.
The timber was seized acting on a specific intelligence received from reliable sources about movement of illegal timber by troops of Shangshak Battalion under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South), a statement said.
The ‘illegal’ timber consignment was seized near Litan-Mahadev Camp on NH-202.
The timber was being transported without legal documents in two trucks. The trucks belong to Achan, a resident of Ukhrul district. The assessed market value of the recovered timber is Rs 40 Lakh, the Assam Rifles said.
The drivers along with the recovered timber were handed over to Litan Police for further investigation, it added.
