Imphal: Bhratiya Janata Party (BJP), Manipur president A. Sharda Devi has declined to comment on the recent Kuki Inpi Manipur statement that no Kuki-Zo legislators would participate in the formation of a new government in the state.
State BJP president met the reporters after she attended the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee held at state party office, here on Sunday.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Kuki apex body said the resolution represents the “collective political will and aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people and is binding upon all Kuki-Zo representatives and community organisations.”
Of the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, seven belong to the BJP.
Following the Meitei-Kuki clash that broke out on May 3, 2023, the Kuki legislators have been demanding a separate administration in the form of a Union Territory.
Sharda Devi reiterated that she would not make any comment on the matter.
BJP MLA Dinganglung Gangmei responded to reporters, “In a parliamentary democracy, the party leaders will decide; we are just karyakartas.”
Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba made similar response, “The decision to take any step depends on the central leadership. I don’t have any comment on that at the moment.”
Since the Manipur violence erupted in May 3, 2023 over 60,000 individuals have been displaced and more than 250 people were killed.
“We are hopeful, as the chief secretary had stated, that the internally displaced persons will be rehabilitated by the end of December,” MLA Dinganglung Gangmei said.
