Imphal: The tree plantation campaign of “Women For Trees” continued with a tree plantation programme on Friday at Thana Maning Leikai Pukhri Achouba, Mayang Imphal in Imphal West district.
The programme was jointly organized by the Mayang Imphal Municipal Council, Town Planning department and the Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA).
It was conducted under the theme of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam/ Upal ama Emagi Mingda”, a campaign initiated under AMRUT Mitra of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0).
The event was graced by Asem Radhamani Devi, caretaker chairperson Mayang Imphal Municipal Council, Nongthombam Benju Singh, chief Town Planner and State Mission director, AMRUT 2.0, Municipal Councillors of Mayang Imphal Municipal Council along with officers from Town Planning Department and MUDA, Manipur.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from the women Self-Help Group (SHGs) under the
aegis of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM) and local residents, who actively took part in planting saplings at the designated locations near the Thana Maning Leikai Pukhri Achouba where Water Body Rejuvenation Project is taken up under AMRUT 2.0, said a press statement released by Town Planning department and MUDA, Manipur
During the programme, the chief Town Planner highlighted the importance of community-led aforestation, women’s leadership in environmental conservation, and the broader impact of green cover on climate resilience. He continued that women members of the Self Help Groups under the framework of AMRUT Mitra will take a lead in tree plantation on the theme “Upal ama Emagi Mingda”, which is a ‘heartfelt tribute to mothers’. Under this campaign, the women SHG members will not only undertake plantation, but maintain the saplings for at least two years to ensure survivability.
The plantation drive witnessed the planting of about 100 number of saplings altogether, reaffirming the community’s commitment to a greener and cleaner Mayang Imphal. The saplings planted were Geo-tagged for effective monitoring every three months. The initiative marks a notable step forward in aligning with national efforts for urban green cover expansion and sustainable development.
The “Women For Trees” campaign was launched in Manipur on World Environment Day, June 5 at Imphal by the Principal Secretary (MAHUD), Manipur. After Mayang Imphal town, plantation drive under this campaign will continue at Nambol and Moirang towns within June.
