Imphal: Tree Plantation programme was organised at Kabowakching, Nambol, by Nambol Municipal Council, Town Planning department, Manipur, and the Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA).
The programme was a continuation campaign under the theme of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam/ Upal ama Emagi Mingda”, a campaign initiated under AMRUT Mitra of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0).
The event was graced by Ch. Basanta Singh, caretaker chairperson, Nambol Municipality, Nongthombam Benju Singh, chief Town Planner/ State Mission director, AMRUT 2.0, councillors of Nambol Municipal Council along with officers from Town Planning department and MUDA, Manipur.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from the women Self-Help Group (SHGs) under the aegis of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAYNULM) and local residents, who actively took part in planting saplings at the designated locations near the Kabowakching Makha Leikai Pukhri Achouba, where Water Body Rejuvenation Project is taken up under AMRUT 2.0.
During the programme, Benju highlighted the importance of community-led afforestation, women’s leadership in environmental conservation, and the broader impact of green cover on climate resilience.
He said women members of the Self-Help Groups (SHGs)under the framework of AMRUT Mitra will take a lead in tree plantation on the theme “Upal ama Emagi Mingda”, which is a heartfelt tribute to mothers and further requested to take care of the trees as their own mother.
Basanta encouraged and motivated the SHGs to tend the trees with care and respect for an overall holistic development of the community.
Under this campaign, the women self-help group members will not only undertake plantation, but maintain the saplings for at least two years to ensure survivability.
The plantation drive witnessed the planting of about 170 number of saplings altogether, reaffirming the community’s commitment to a greener and cleaner Nambol. The saplings planted were Geo-tagged for effective monitoring every three months.
The initiative marked a notable step forward in aligning with national efforts for urban green cover expansion and sustainable development.
The campaign was launched in Manipur on World Environment Day, June 5 at Imphal by the principal secretary (MAHUD), Manipur followed by Mayang Imphal town on Friday. The plantation drive under this campaign will continue at Moirang town on June 25.
