Imphal: The department of Art and Culture, Manipur, organised a commemorative event titled “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” on Wednesday at Palace Auditorium of Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), here.
The event aimed to reflect on the impact of Emergency imposed in 1975 and promote the values of democracy and patriotism.
Vivek Kumar Dewangan, additional chief secretary (Finance), Manipur, said on this day, fifty years ago, India witnessed the imposition of a nationwide Emergency in 1975, which led to the suspension of civil liberties, erosion of constitutional safeguards, and an unprecedented centralization of executive power.
Vivek Kumar Dewangan went on to inform about the Suspension of Fundamental Rights during 1975 Emergency which led to widespread arrest of student leaders and social activists, political opponents and journalist across the country. He further added that the freedom of press also became a casualty but it was subjected to strict censorship.
25th June was notified as “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” by the ministry of Home Affairs and other government bodies to commemorate the imposition of the Emergency in India on June 25, 1975, and to pay tribute to those who suffered during that period, he added.
Screening of a short film on Democracy and Patriotism and brief speeches given by persons who had been affected by Emergency in 1975 were the main highlight of the event.
A dance performance choreography on Democracy and Patriotism by Government Dance College, Manipur was also showcased as a part of the event.
