Manipur Flood: Over 3,200 localities affected, 883 houses damaged

Imphal: Incessant rainfall over the past five days has led to a severe rise in flood levels across the Imphal valley, affecting at least 3,275 localities, damaging 883 houses, and killing 64 domestic animals, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The rainfall, particularly heavy in catchment areas, has caused the Imphal, Nambul, and Iril rivers to overflow, breaching banks in several locations. The Imphal River overflowed at five different points, with breaches reported at Kontha Ahalup and Khurai Heikrumakhong.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate rainfall was recorded in the last three hours until 10 am Sunday. Kangpokpi district’s Saikul area recorded 16 mm, while Noney district’s Khoupum received 24 mm of rain. The Imphal West district also logged 15 mm of rainfall. These areas serve as catchments for the rivers flowing into Imphal city.

“The IMD reported accumulated rainfall of 49 mm in Kangpokpi, 91 mm in Noney, and 82.5 mm in Imphal West since 3 am Sunday. The water levels of the Iril and Nambul rivers have also crossed the danger mark,” officials said.

The Directorate of Relief and Disaster Management reported that, as of 6 pm Saturday, the floods have impacted 3,802 individuals, injured two people, and led to the evacuation of 720 residents with the help of local volunteers. Six relief camps have been set up in the Imphal East district to shelter displaced persons.

Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, the Indian Army, state police, and fire services have been actively engaged in rescue and relief operations, using boats to reach affected areas.

District administrations have issued emergency helpline numbers for residents in need of assistance.
