Imphal: The 57-year-old man who went missing on Sunday, after reportedly falling into the Abulok River in Imphal West, was found dead in the river on Tuesday by volunteers of Arambai Tenggol and local residents.
The body of the deceased (Takhellambam Ibochouba) of Lairenkabi Mamang Leikai, Imphal West, was found at around 12:20 pm during a search operation by Arambai Tengol, a Meitei group, and area locals.
“The body was found in the river, around 100 feet from the spot where he reportedly fell,” a police officer said.
Following due procedures and a post-mortem examination at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, the body was handed over to the family, Lamphel police said.
Continuous rainfall across Manipur has caused widespread flooding. Most of the major rivers have overflowed and breached at multiple locations.
As of 10:00 am, Tuesday, water levels in the Imphal, Iril, Nambol, and Nambul rivers, among others, were reportedly decreasing but remained near warning levels.
Over 2,611 individuals are currently taking shelter in 57 relief camps set up across Imphal East and West.
The flood has affected 56,516 people, damaged 10,477 houses, killed 64 domestic animals and destroyed 64.31 hectares of crops.
“No flash flood risk is likely over the next 24 hours, until 5:30 pm, Tuesday,” according to the Indian Meteorological Department’s Hydromet Division Flash Flood Guidance Cell.
