Imphal: Flood caused by six days of incessant rainfall has, so far till Monday, affected 19,811 people, damaged 3,365 houses and destroyed 11.8 hectares of crops, while landslides have occurred at 47 locations.
Water levels in nearly all major rivers remain above the high flood mark. However, the Manipur River has receded slightly to the warning level.
According to the latest report from the Relief and Disaster Management department, the overflow and breaches of the Imphal and Iril rivers have affected 19,811 people. A total of 3,365 houses were damaged, and 1,599 individuals were evacuated. Additionally, 11.8 hectares of crops were destroyed, and landslides occurred at 47 locations. No human fatalities have been reported so far.
The government has also opened 7 relief camps for the affected areas. The state Water Resources department reported that rainfall in the river catchment areas has decreased, recording 11.50 mm in Kangpokpi as of 1 p.m. ‘Authorities are working actively to repair the damaged riverbanks and prevent further flooding.’
Floodwater also inundated the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East, leading to the cancellation of routine operations as many ground-floor wards were submerged. Patients were shifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, and other nearby district hospitals.
Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, state security forces, the Army, and local volunteers were continuing evacuation efforts for patients admitted to the flooded ground-floor wards.
