Centre alleged of ‘Playing Divisive Game’ in Manipur

Imphal: Government of India was alleged of Playing Divisive game in Manipur, during the 24th anniversary of the Great June Uprising day organised at the memorial complex, Kekrupat, here on Wednesday.

The day was observed in commemoration of the historic people’s uprising of June 18, 2001, when 18 civilians were killed in a security force firing during a massive protest against the extension of the ceasefire agreement “without territorial limits” between the Government of India and the NSCN (I-M).

The day was interpreted as Unity Day and Integrity day.

Large number of people, including civil society members, student leaders and political representatives gathered at the memorial complex to offer floral tributes to the 18 martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting to uphold Manipur’s territorial integrity.

The annual event was jointly organised by the United Committee Manipur and the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation, with the support from various civil society groups and families of the deceased.

A public meeting held at the memorial complex reflected on the historical and current significance of the 2001 uprising. Speakers highlighted the need for communal harmony and collective vigilance against any threats to Manipur’s territorial unity.

Chairman of the Organising Committee, Nando Luwang, talking to reporters, said, “Manipur is a small state. Its communities had been living together in peace. We must not allow divisive forces to create rifts. Instead of blaming one another, we should focus on peaceful coexistence,” he said.

Luwang accused Centre of playing a “divisive game” by allegedly favouring certain communities and underground groups. “If the Government of India truly cares for Manipur, it must stop such tactics,” he said.

“Centre takes swift action when terror strikes other parts of the country. Why is that urgency missing in Manipur?” he asked, calling for a uniform national response to terrorism.

The commemoration served as a solemn reminder of the people’s enduring spirit and their commitment to safeguarding the state’s integrity.
