Bishnupur people suspend shutdown

Imphal: Bishnupur people have suspended the the total shutdown call following a swift and positive response from the Manipur government, which dispatched inspector general of Manipur Police (Intelligence) K. Kabib along with the district administration for a spot enquiry at Phubala.

Bishnupur people groups served an ultimatum demanding a spot enquiry to the firing incident at Phubala by the governor, chief secretary, or security advisor by 11 am of Friday. They warned to launch a total shutdown if their demand was not met within the deadline

On Thursday, a farmer, Ningthoujam Biren Singh, sustained a bullet injury, allegedly fired by Kuki militants while he was working at a paddy field in Phubala, adjacent to a Kuki village.

As part of the police investigation, IGP (Intelligence) K. Kabib, accompanied by the Bishnupur district administration and superintendent of police, visited the site where the farmer was injured—located on the western side of Phubala high canal in Bishnupur district.

A representative of the Bishnupur people’s body told reporters that the planned indefinite shutdown was suspended after the government officials conducted the spot enquiry on Friday.

“The issue is very sensitive, as the incident took place after crossing three layers of security. We and the government officials have agreed to conduct a thorough enquiry and ensure the culprit is booked and punished within seven days,” he said.
