Union Minister Harsh Malhotra to visit Manipur for 3 days

Imphal: Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport and Highways, Harsh Malhotra, was scheduled to land Manipur on May 27 for a 3-day visit.

“The visit is part of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region’s initiative to send Union ministers to the Northeast to assess ground-level developments,” said a statement issued by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations on Monday (DIPR). “Malhotra is expected to travel to Tengnoupal district, one of the Indo-Myanmar border districts, to review development needs and key social indicators in the area.” According to the statement, the minister will also evaluate the progress of various central government schemes and projects, especially those related to the ministries of Corporate Affairs and Road Transport and Highways.

Tengnoupal district includes Moreh town, one of India’s largest trade centres along the Indo-Myanmar border. Moreh has remained paralyzed since the day ethnic violence began, May 3, 2023. Multiple reports have surfaced across media platforms about the arrest of smugglers with illegal items, including drugs, along the Trans-Asian Highway that passes through the district.

The DIPR statement also mentioned that a detailed report on the minister’s visit will be sent to the DoNER Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office for further follow-up. All concerned officials have been instructed to take necessary steps to ensure the success of the Union minister’s visit and to fulfill its objectives, it said.
