Imphal: A one-day awareness programme on the Role of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) was held on Friday at Heingang Gram Panchayat Community Hall, Heingang Mayai Leikai, Imphal East.
The programme was organised by Manipur State Commission for Women and Spiritual Women Organization, Heingang Mayai Leikai.
Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, chairperson of MSCW, highlighted the importance of organising awareness programmes aimed at promoting gender equality and women empowerment.
Speaking at a recent function, she emphasized that both men and women play equal roles—each contributing fifty percent—in building the nation and driving economic progress.
The chairperson noted that the goal is to achieve full gender equality by the year 2030. She said the concept of gender equality is sometimes misunderstood, stressing that it is fundamentally about education and understanding the true essence of women’s empowerment.
Recalling the old adage, “Men build houses, women build homes,” Monsang encouraged women to recognise their potential, educate themselves, and embrace the real meaning and significance of empowerment.
SK. Sophia Moyon, member MSCW, said the Women’s Commission exists solely to protect, support, and raise awareness among women. Urging active participation, she called on women to benefit from such programmes and to become agents of change within their communities.
Sophia mentioned that, the Manipur State Commission for Women 2006 Act was enacted to address and resolve all issues concerning women in the state. Emphasizing the importance of responsiveness in today’s digital age, she said, “The Women’s Commission has already registered 1,266 cases, of which 1,250 have been successfully resolved—either through mutual understanding or legal intervention.”
“The most commonly reported cases include domestic violence, harassment, rape, molestation, divorce, and child custody disputes.”
Sophia urged all women to come forward and register their grievances with the commission, noting that the process is entirely free of cost. She also encouraged women to inquire about and avail themselves of government-sponsored schemes aimed at their welfare.
Dr, Ch. Narendra Singh, advocate and Gurumayum Ravi Sharma deliberated insights on the topic “The Role of MSCW” and “Available Women Related Government Schemes under Social Welfare Department” as the part of the technical session.
Member secretary MSCW, W. Phajatombi Devi, MCS, members MSCW Lourembam Dayabati and T. Chuongsin Koireng were on the dais as the presidium members along with members of the panchayat, self help groups, spiritual women organisation and locals were also among the participants.
