Imphal: Around 47 bags of volume about 9 cubic metre of plastic waste were collected in a cleanliness drive at Cheiraoching (hill), Imphal on Tuesday in connection with thr observance of Earth Day 2025.
The day was observed on the theme “Our Power, Our Planet”.
The Central Forest Division, Government of Manipur, organized a special cleanliness drive at the hill in Langol Reserved Forest area.
The initiative was led by Vikram Nadhe, divisional Forest officer, Central Forest Division, Manipur with his team and saw active participation from local clubs, students, and teachers.
The event aimed to reinforce the message of environmental responsibility, community participation, and the urgent need to protect our natural ecosystems. As part of the drive, participants engaged in litter collection, removal of non-biodegradable waste, and awareness activities highlighting the importance of forest conservation and sustainable living.
The Forest officer emphasized the critical role of collective community action in preserving forest landscapes and safeguarding biodiversity. “This year’s Earth Day theme reminds us that the power to bring change lies in our hands. Our forests are our planet’s lungs, and through such initiatives, we not only clean the environment but also foster a sense of ownership and responsibility towards nature among our youth and local citizens.”
A general appeal was made to the public to follow the principle of sustainable eco-tourism. National Green Tribunal has banned use of Single use plastic. Recently the district administration has formed district level task force against Single Use Plastic and many initiatives are taken up against use of single use plastic. Through this initiative the office appealed the general public to stop the use of single use plastic and replace it with more eco friendly options.
The Forest department extended its sincere appreciation to the students, educators, and local volunteers who made the event a success through their spirited participation.
The Central Forest Division, Government of Manipur remains committed to promoting sustainable environmental practices and will continue to undertake similar outreach programs in collaboration with local communities and educational institutions, Vikram Nadhe said.
