Imphal: At least 14 villagers and 12 security personnel were injured in a violence that broke out in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Wednesday over a land dispute involving three villages Dailong, Duigailong and Old Tamenglong.

An irate mob also torched the Public Works Department (PWD) inspection bungalow. Officials said the violence erupted around 12:30 pm following heightened tensions among residents of the three villages.

A meeting was held earlier at a tea plantation area in Tamenglong Khunjao (Old Tamenglong) around 11:00 am. The meeting was convened to discuss a long-standing land dispute in the area. Subsequently, nearly 2,000 people of Old Tamenglong marched in a rally toward the offices of the district magistrate and superintendent of police to submit a memorandum.

Tensions escalated when unknown individuals, allegedly from Dailong village and already present at the Tamenglong district headquarters, began pelting stones at the rallying crowd. The situation quickly descended into a violent clash between the two groups. Security forces stationed at the site fired multiple rounds of tear gas and mock bombs in an attempt to disperse the mob and restore order.

Amid the chaos, protesters reportedly set fire the PWD inspection bungalow in Tamenglong, said officials. The 14 injured persons belonged to Dailong and Old Tamenglong. The 12 injured security personnel included eight civil police, two Manipur Rifles personnel, and two CRPF personnel.

The district magistrate imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, across the town of Tamenglong and in the bordering areas of Dailong, Duigailong, and Old Tamenglong. “The restriction order will be enforced with immediate effect and shall remain in force until further orders,” the official notification stated.
