Imphal: A highly explosive hand grenade was found planted at the main entrance of an ICICI Bank branch at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai, Imphal West, on Wednesday morning.
Another similar explosive device was found planted at Kangla Foods in Nambol, Bishnupur district on Tuesday.
These developments came amid ongoing precautionary measures by the Manipur government to curb extortion.
According to the Singjamei police station, Imphal West district, the bomb at the bank was discovered by morning joggers around 8 am.
A police team led by its SDPO rushed to the spot and found the grenade placed at the main door of the bank on the stairs.
Police said, “The bomb was found without a lever, so we requested the bomb disposal squad to handle the situation.”
A bomb disposal squad safely recovered the grenade around 10:02 am. It was found without a detonator.
“The bomb is a highly explosive No. 36 hand grenade. However, the identity of the individuals who planted it and their motive remain unclear. We are investigating the matter and suspect it might be related to extortion.”
The other bomb which was found planted at Kangla Foods at Nambol was accompanied by a warning note that read, “Contact us within 24 hours at the given phone number… this is the last warning for the manager.”
The bombs were safely recovered and seized following due legal procedures.
