Imphal: While as many houses have been partially submerged in water in Imphal due to incessant rain since the past few days in Manipur, public volunteers, state authorities and forces, and central forces took up rescue measures on Wednesday.

With the breach of Imphal River on Tuesday night at Kairang area most of the area of Khabam Lamkhai and its surroundings including Inter State Bus Terminus, here, have been affected.

In follow up action on rescuing people, joint teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Manipur Police, Manipur State Fire Service, Indian Army, volunteers of Arambai Tengol, volunteers of local club of the area with rescue boats has been struggling for safety.

Pothshang reporter witnessed vehicles submersed in water.

Locals said they heard the breaching of Imphal river bank at its western side of Kairang area in the night. In the early morning, the water level suddenly increased due to the reason many of the properties including vehicles are submersed under water.

“Despite of the rescue efforts many of us do not have safe place for staying night,” said a Kairang resident.

The joint rescue team started rescuing the residences starting from Tuesday night at around 10 pm and they were still continuing.

People appealed the government to take necessary measures so that the people who were evacuated can stay as relief camp.

Chief minister N. Biren Singh on his facebook page uploaded a video clip showing rescuing people who are affected by flood.

He said, “Due to water breaches in several river banks, many lives including cattle have been seriously affected. All concerned authorities of the state government security personnel, NDRF and local volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure safety and provide assistance to everyone affected. Those who got stranded in severely affected areas are being relocated to safe places using boats.”

Due to the breaching of Imphal River, North AOC, NH 2 along the stretch of Hotel Imphal, Khoyathong crossing, Nagamapal road have been over flooded.

Nambul river at Wahengbam Leikai bus parking, Keishamthong Thangjam Leirak, Khagempalli were seen over flooded. Besides, with the high water level, the water from Nambul river were also found leaked from the joining gaps of retaining wall constructed along Sagolband road causing flood at Sagolband Moirang Leirak, Sagolband Meino Leirak, Keishampat Leimajam Leikai and its surroundings.

From the leakage of Nambul River water campus of Cheirap court was also flooded.

According to Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Tamenglong district has recorded highest rainfall with 56.6 mm which is followed by Bishnupur district with 32.2 mm; Imphal West as 27.4 mm and Imphal East as 18.8 mm.

Locals of Khabam Lamkhai reported that the water level was increasing gradually and rescue operation is still continuing. Efforts are continuing on fixing the breach of Imphal River at Kairang area.

Rainfall continuied in Imphal and other parts of the state on Wednesday evening.
