Imphal: Assam Rifles has intercepted a total of 199 Indian trucks that were involved in the illegal transportation of arecanuts and timber worth approximately ‘Rs 159 crore and Rs 4.88 crore’ respectively.
The interception of trucks was made in multiple search operations in response to credible intelligence indicating the unlawful transportation of arecanuts and timber in the region of Kangpat Centre and Kangpat Khunou of Kamjong district, the Assam Rifles said in a statement released on Tuesday.
The operations led to confiscation of substantial quantity of dumped arecanuts and timber. The intercepted goods are suspected to be intended for unauthorised distribution in the black market, the Assam Rifles said.
Upon thorough inspection, the search operations resulted in significant seizures, encompassing 15230 bags of arecanuts weighing a total of approximately 1321.62 tons which is valued at approximately Rs 159 crore and 50,603 CFT of timber worth Rs 4.88 crore respectively, it added.
These confiscated goods were handed over to the Forest Beat officer of Kamjong district. The successful operations curtailed wide scale illegal activities, underscoring the commitment and commendable results of Assam Rifles in upholding legal and ethical standards in the region, the Assam Rifles said.
