48-hr general strike shortened to 24 hour

Imphal: The forty-eight hours general strike imposed across the state by 13 organisations has been shortened to 24 hours after considering ongoing class X and XII examination and ongoing situation of Manipur.

The general strike was imposed decrying the arrest of three cadres of Pambei led UNLF including its army in chief. The organisations demanded unconditional release of the trio.

In a joint release issued and signed by FOCS, IPOM, MWF, UMO, MKNM, MPWO, WMO, YKL, Anouba Senmmitlon and a student’s body mentioned that the 48 hours general strike has been shortened to 24 hours after considering the ongoing class X and XII examination.

When the general strike was announced, it was mentioned that right to live is more important than right to education and examination can be appeared many times.

In the joint release it appealed to demonstrate protest in the form of sit-in, mass rally and torch rally in a democratic manner.

As the public has a confusion on the announcement of 48 hours general strike market vendors of Keishamthong was seen normal, Khwairamband Ima market was seen partially occupied by the women vendors, some schools were seen closed but some were seen opened. Government offices, shops at Paona and Thangal bazaar were seen closed, less number of transportation as compared with normal days was also seen.

However, bandh supporters at Moirang area destroyed some vehicles allegedly for not cooperating the 48 hours general strike.
